ADHESION OF FLEXIBLE POLYESTER TO HARD SURFACES

In textiles, high elongation and abrasion resistance are key requirements of coatings.

This is why we’ve built-up a lot of expertise in this field. Our experts were involved in projects from artificial leather to backpacks and industrial bellows. As a result, adhesion promotion of flexible material to hard surfaces is now one of the best practices we’re most proud of.

CROSS INDUSTRY CHALLENGE

The mechanical bonding of polyester to hard surfaces like PVC and TPU is a tricky thing. This is due to difference in surface tension and structure. We learned about this challenge during one of our projects for industrial conveyor belts that transport heavy marble stones. The belts endure a lot of abrasion but have to be flexible enough to bend around the rollers. In this case, we needed a flexible and strong primer to smooth out the polyester to promote adhesion towards the TPU topcoat.

In our search for a solution, we crossed our industry borders. There, we found interfaces with non-textile companies that are part of the same innovation ecosystem. We found out there was a lot we could learn from each other.

For example, we spoke with a development team that was looking for an adhesion promotor for polyester to glass. Second, we realised that adhesion is an ever more complex issue in the automotive sector too, as more and more metal parts are being replaced with lightweight composite material.

In the end, we found the solution to our problem in one of our own products. As the textile industry demands coatings with high elongation, one of our EDOLAN® tiecoats turned out to perform surprisingly well. This water-based aliphatic coating that contains 40% solids was used as an adhesion promotor towards the hard topcoat of the conveyor belts. Problem solved!
